Is it just me, or are you obsessed with keeping your home germ-free during the colder months too?

Josh works in the IT department of our local hospital, so he tends to get sick at least once every winter. We both used to get sick more often than that, but ever since we transitioned to a mostly plant-based lifestyle, we don’t get sick nearly as often as we used to. In fact, I’m approaching two years since having my last cold! *knock on wood*

Even though our healthy diet is probably a huge factor in our improved immune systems, I also believe that diffusing essential oils is another integral part of our cold-fighting abilities.

You see, one of my favorite uses for essential oils is diffusing them in my essential oil diffuser. I have a variety of essential oils in my collection, but today I want to share with you my favorite blend of essential oils for colds. This is the blend I use any time Josh or I get sick. I also diffuse these oils as often as possible during the winter months to help keep the air in our home clean.

So if you’d like to add essential oils to your germ-fighting efforts this year, then keep on reading!

The Best Essential Oils for Colds

If you search for “essential oils for colds” on Pinterest, you’ll see results for all sorts of essential oils and essential oil blends including

And many others!

I haven’t tried all of these, but I did notice that my two favorite oils usually rank among the ones other people recommend. So which ones are they?

I’m glad you asked!

My two favorite essential oils for colds are peppermint and eucalyptus. Both of them have antimicrobial properties (read more about peppermint essential oil here and eucalyptus essential oil here), and the combination of the two makes for a cool, tingly, menthol sensation when inhaled.

If you like the fragrance of peppermint, then I think you’ll especially enjoy this blend. You not only get the health benefits of the oils, but you also get to enjoy a minty fragrance in your home!

Essential Oil Diffuser Blend and Diffuser Placement

I typically use four drops of peppermint and four drops of eucalyptus in my diffuser. This is the updated version of the diffuser I have, and I’ve been really happy with it! The water chamber is large, so I don’t have to refill it as often throughout the day.

In general, I keep my diffuser on a table in our living room. This is a central location where our kitties can’t reach the cord.

Seriously, does anyone else have trouble with their cats chewing on cords?!

However, if one of us is sick, I usually move the diffuser around with the sick person. For example, if Josh is in his man cave, then I’ll move the diffuser in there with him. And when it’s bedtime, I’ll move the diffuser to the nightstand on his side of the bed. Doing this ensures that the sick person gets maximum exposure to the oils.

A Note about Brands

Until a few months ago, I wasn’t brand-loyal to any essential oil company. I used to purchase oils from Aura Cacia, NOW, and some house brands from my local health food store.

However, after doing a bit of research and learning more about Young Living’s essential oils, I realized that they make some of the best stuff out there. Their oils are organic, and since the company controls the entire process from seed to seal, the final product is superior to other essential oils.

Special Note: I don’t sell Young Living essential oils. I just think they’re awesome!

True, Young Living oils are more expensive. But when I need a specific result from my oils (in the case of health remedies), I go straight to Young Living. For less serious matters (such as making my laundry smell good by putting essential oils on my wool dryer balls), I’ll grab a less expensive essential oil. I just do what makes sense for the particular situation.

Right now, I’m using Young Living’s peppermint essential oil and a house brand of eucalyptus essential oil from my favorite health food store. The eucalyptus is a bottle that I already had, so when it runs out, I’ll start using one of Young Living’s eucalyptus oils.

Wrapping It Up

So there you have it! Peppermint and eucalyptus are my favorite essential oils for colds. I use four drops of each oil in my essential oil diffuser any time we get sick, and I also diffuse this blend all throughout the cooler months to help keep the air in our home clean. It works wonders for us, and I feel certain that you’ll love this blend just as much as I do! Give it a try and let me know what you think!

  1. Hello Summer, Thanks for sharing this info with us. I have a few questions for you. I actually have asked a couple of other bloggers but they have never responded back to me. First do the essential oils really work? Second, What are their benefits?

    1. Hi, Mark!
Thank you for taking the time to comment! Both peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils are antimicrobial, and peppermint even has antiviral properties. Because of their antiviral and antimicrobial properties, these oils are great for fighting off cold and flu germs that may be hanging around in your home. I have personally found that this particular blend does work well in my home. I haven’t had a cold in over two years! While I’m sure my good eating habits play a significant role in keeping my immune system in tip-top shape, I also believe these essential oils do a great job of keeping the air in my home germ-free.
